“May I come In” by Wendy Goodman is a visual feast of an interiors coffee table book with text as interesting as the pictures. Highly recommend. Thank, as ever, for your B&B recs!
Another great "dip into" book on the decorating front is The Perfectly Imperfect Home by Deborah Needleman - it's whimsically illustrated and full of lovely ideas for "cozifying" a home - and Rita Konig's NYC single-girl apartment is in it! Perfect for a hurkle-durkle...😉
Your comment about print magazines dying got me thinking. As a print fan myself, I wonder if at some point the pendulum will swing back in the other direction, and the big magazine publishers will see the error of their ways and invest again in magazines (instead of cutting back).
I have never worked in publishing so I really have no idea what I am talking about, and it could be wishful thinking, but I do hope for a future where print magazines are still in it!
I think the problem is people just don’t read like that anymore. They don’t want to spend £6 on one magazine. Instead they pay subscriptions online or to Substack (!) Less readers = less advertisers. And without advertising revenue, there just isn’t *the money* for publishers to invest in print. It just isn’t there. Commercial teams (advertorials) are getting bigger while editorials shrink smaller and smaller... when I first started in print 13 years ago, there were assistants and junior editors and senior editors and whole teams. They still have those in the US (much bigger territory = much bigger teams) but the emphasis here (and actually to be fair in the states too) is increasingly online.
I love print magazines. I am bummed that Andy Borowitz was let go from the New Yorker. I live for his satire. And I agree with your thoughts on that Vogue cover...Have a great weekend!
A lovely collection of recommendations, as always 📚 and so fun that you've just discovered Llanfairpwll (as it's sometimes called when people can't be bothered to say the full thing)!
When I went to uni, as a Welsh person meeting lots of new people I so often had interactions along the lines of "okay you're Welsh, BUT can you even SAY that ridiculously long train station name???" ... It's like a badge of honour 😂🏴
Thank you for the great round-up of links and essay. Made for a very cosy evening.
A completely unrelated question: Are you still doing your podcast with Bobby Palmer, Book Chat? I miss your episodes and wonder if I missed an announcement that it's over...
DEFO not over! We are taking a break until January as we do it in our spare time/ evenings, and both of us were struggling to make time with it with young babes. We will be back in January and can't wait!

Thank you for the link to Susie Dent’s Word Perfect. I was reminded how much I enjoyed her tweets back when I was on Twitter.
