Maeve Binchy! I read so many of hers years ago and that’s a great reminder to return to them! Pandora, I hope you are going to give us your number one of the year!
I struggle with this question SO MUCH! I might give you five??? I also need to read Maeve Binchy. God the nostalgia of her name - Caroline’s right, it’s that holiday rental bookshelf for millennials
Yessss! Circle of Friends! I’m old enough to have read it before the inevitably disappointing film version. Loved it then, this has made me want to re-read.
So, the book isn't divided into chapters which I hadn't encountered before. I also wasn't in my reading era (lol) when I picked it up. Combined, it just seemed unsuitable and difficult to read so I stopped after 20-30 pages. I do intend to return to it now, perhaps next year or in 2026.
Hmm, I prefer to finish a chapter after every meal but it’s not a hard and fast rule. On the whole, I like chapters in books because they help me to feel a sense of continued accomplishment. “One down, ten more to go!” Plus, I’m used to that style of organisation since that’s how books are usually arranged.
Added Rejection & Happy All The Time to my TBR. I'll scope out Orbit to see if it's something I may enjoy.
I'm adding MYYYYYY fave 2024 book - Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar - brilliance.
Loved Martyr!
Caroline got me onto a Maeve Binchy binge last year after she spoke about Circle of Friends on her podcast. Honestly, it’s such a good read.
I was totally on the same page in not acknowledging the greatness of Binchy’s work due to misconceptions.
Loved this format, Pandora! Makes it really easy to add a few titles to the TBR pile. Thank you 🎄

I’ve ways loved Laurie Colwin. So glad she is getting new readers
I know! Nick’s piece made me laugh a lot. Of course men would recommend women’s domestic fiction! (But they should)

My takeaway from this is that yes, I should return to Love in the Time of Cholera and complete it. Thank you, Coco Mellors.
(Circle of Friends sounds great, too).
I never started Love in the Time of Cholera - had you just not finished it?

I’ve never considered how much chapters (their presence, their length) affect my reading experience
Do you like to ‘finish’ for the night on a chapter end? Is that an important aspect of reading for you?

after every meal! i love this. what readerly organisation
I love that "my reading era" - I have read the most I *ever* have this year in my entire life. Cheers to a new year of reading our books!
Just bought Rejection!
I’m going to as well! I’m actually going to go to try and read most of these, now
I can’t believe Circle of Friends got a mention. One of my favourite films ever but too embarrassed to say!
This is GREAT ! Thank you. A few to add to my list here.
I really enjoyed this, thank you so much for putting it together!
