The List #15
Magpie Vintage have opened a store, a great Y2K account on Vinted, and my fave spots in Rye. Also! A most excellent picture framer
I had a lovely day trip to Rye recently (albeit totally zonked, as my baby was unwell) and have a few reccs for anyone going:
Merchant & Mills for traditional, well-priced fabrics and a big selection of sewing patterns for anyone with skills. It’s all very Toast.
McCully & Crane (which I learned about through interiors writer A Considered Space, who has a new Substack) for a gorgeous selection of art, objects and furniture - they’ve really thought about the journey of the curation as you move through the store.
Fig, for delicious food. The chef reached the quarter finals on MasterChef last month, which is a great endorsement.
I followed that up with a trip to Folkestone to see my godmother and on a turn around the high street I spotted a vintage pop-up by Antik Store. I was so impressed by the sourcing and pricing. They’ve moved on now, but you can shop it all via Instagram.
Closer to home, one of my favourite online vintage shops has opened a bricks and mortar store on Portobello Road and I’ve been forcing everyone I know to go. They do not regret it! I’ve mentioned Magpie Vintage’s upcycled chore jackets on The List before, and there are plenty of brilliant tartan ones there, but there is also a ton of great vintage, like leather jackets (I tried on an excellent powder blue one) and patchwork velvet jackets and long leather boots.
As anyone who knows me knows, I am in my Vinted era. (Thank you to everyone who shopped my big sale for The NSPCC recently!) One of my favourite finds of late is Christie’s Cupboard [type the name into the app, I can’t link via my desktop] which sells lots of late 90s/ early 00s pieces like leather bombers, sheer shirts, lace t-shirts, hankie hem dresses. The fact that I remember these trends the first time round makes me feel incredibly old… so it’s best not to dwell.
