On not finishing books

Do you stoically bear each book to completion, or do you ditch it the moment you feel a tickle of boredom

I’d been thinking endlessly about how freely I should stop reading a book that doesn’t grab me by the throat and how futile it was feeling to make a dent in my reading piles. So I polled my followers on Instagram - something I wonder if I should do more; it’s in-built crowd sourcing! - and here are a few of the responses:

“I don’t finish them if I don’t enjoy them… instead they sit on my bedside table, in a little abandoned judgement pile”

“I’m a ditch as soon as I’m bored kinda gal” but “my partner has to get to the end of a chapter”

“If it’s boring I just - hmm what’s it called in English - skim it we say in Norwegian. Like skimmed milk, light sloppy fast reading”

“It’s better not to if you’re not into it! You actually read more because you’ll move on to something you like. Gretchen Rubin always says this”
