Comfort blanket reading
Sometimes books need to challenge. Sometimes they just need to just wash over you
I’m sorry this is late. My car got stolen yesterday, on the first day of half term, with all 3 of the kids car seats inside, and the logistics have been endless!
Generally speaking, I don’t look to be comforted by books. I like to be excited, surprised, moved and/or disturbed (although I’m really not into thrillers these days.) I read a lot of non-fiction, for that very reason. But about 10% of the time, when I am at a low ebb, I am desperate to be comforted. And I know exactly where to go.
I climb up the stairs to the small set of bookshelves outside my children’s room and pluck a book from the selection that live there. These are my “break incase of emergencies” shelves. They are battered and mostly second-hand and have been read a half dozen times each. That shelf has saved me ten times over.
